Madras Day 4 : SA Med + Nutrition Lesson

Breakfast today was tomato chutney, idli (the rice patties from earlier in the week), dohl, and suji (a sweet orange colored wheat powder).Today was another day in medicine. I saw 3 cases of parvo in a row. I asked a student about their disinfection and the said, 1 they don't do it because most animals have the same thing or are vaccinated, and 2 they just don't have the time, but he admitted that they really should. One of the cases came in with 2 dogs, one that was not sick. I asked if that dog was also his and the man said "That is her husband. They are in love" :)). I saw a dog with megaespohagus come in and got to view its X-ray. I also saw a case of severe dyspnea get sent to the critical care unit. While there a family rushed in with their 6 week old GSD. You could tell by the smell that it was parvo and he was in bad shape. I couldn't tell he was alive until I listened with my stethoscope to his fast heartrate. We started an IO catheter for fluids and checked again. His heart had stopped. We began compressions and pushed epi, but were unable to revive him. It was sad to see the little 7 year old boy learn about his puppy :(.
We returned for lunch and had fried fish, mint rice, potato salad (kind of german style), rice pudding, and a fruit I forgot the name of. Then we headed back for our afternoon class on nutrition. So far I have liked the lessons since they were hands on and interesting. Today we had lectures. Its hard to pay attention when its 105 degrees and the professor was talking quickly with a heavy accent. They did develop what they refered to as a rumen simulator, which was helpful in order to study rumen gut microbes without testing on actual cows. I also took a picture of one of the bathrooms on campus...enjoy! Afterwards we met with the dean to discuss the remainder of our trip, over, you guessed it, tea.
We went back to the hostel and met with Dr. Subbiah to learn about what was expected of us course-wise and discuss some things that we had seen in the hospital so far. Then we had dinner, vegetable stew and coconut milk served over rice noodles with a side of scrambled eggs and onions.
