Today is Saturday! Breakfast was greasy tortillas, boiled egg, and dohl. The clinic is opened for a shorter time on weekends, only from 8-10. I was in ortho/opthal again. We saw a couple sprains and some hindlimb lamness in kittens. Nothing too exciting. Vitamin B injections, prednisolone, and/or meloxicam injections and then reevaluating in a few days. One man spoke very clear English and we talked for a while. Purebred dogs cost around 5000rs ($80). He almost fell over when I told him in America it is $1200 (80000rs) for a lot of purebred dogs. I also told him about our country's minimum wage and that a person makes around 4000rs/day at minimum wage. He said that if you made that around here you would be one of the richest people around. It was neat learning the differences. Half of our group returned early. They were in the dermatology ward and a dog bit one of our students. She was bruised, and there was no broken skin, but it was still scary. Her scrub top was ripped where he had bit. The head derm vet sent her home and the rest walked with her.
After lunch(coconut rice, green beans, crunchy tortilla, fried egg) we went out shopping for the wedding tomorrow!! We got these outfits called churidhar. They are more or less a one size fits all with slight adjustments, which was fine, but it was ridiculous to fit into them as there are no zippers or clasps, just basically a tube of fabric. To be honest getting it on was not bad, but getting it off was awful. For one you are in this tiny room you can barely turn around in. Two, there is no air conditioning in a lot of these stores. Three, from both the fitting and the heat you are covered in sweat so you basically have to peel the thing off of you. I tried on 5 dresses. On the last dress I was sure they were going to find me dead in the dressing room, suffocated, with a dress halfway off my head. After we finished it sounded like some of the most girls had the same fear. We then went downstairs to pay. After I paid I waited outside. We were pulled back inside for a moment by the manager and were almost worried that we were in trouble. But instead we were dragged back in just so the manager could get a picture of us. It was kind of annoying. Apparently they do that so that they can brag that Americans came to their store.
We walked on to a super store, similar to Walmart. But this store was 11 stories high. The shoe department was an entire floor. I needed shoes as none of my shoes would be suitable. It turns out my feet are too big.. they only had around 3 pairs in my size (Eur 42). I chose a pair but they were very plain. While near the top we took some pictures of the city. While Heidi was getting her camera she knocked her Ray Ban ($$) sunglasses down the gap between the window and the stairs. All 9 stories. We raced to the bottom to try to get them out and were able to retrieve them after Heidi climbed over the railing to reach them. A crowd even formed to watch. She was happy that they were able to be retrieved, and amazingly, the weren't broken or scratched. Afterwards we got some jewelry and headed home in a rickshaw.
We had asked one of the people taking care of us, Mutu, if they drank here. They do, but some religions/cultures look down upon it. He offered to buy us some beer and wine so we gave him money to get some. The beer, Black Pearl, was similar to a Budlight. On the back it said "Liquor ruins country, family, and life" showing how much the culture disapproves. Dinner was idli, dohl, beef, and suji. We played cards and drank a bit with Mutu(who would not drink with us) for the rest of the night.
