Madras Day 7 : Derm Ward + Sx talk

Today I was on dermatology ward. The doctor there was great at explaining what was going on with each case and how to treat. I learned how to do skin scrapings and take tape samples from different cases. We learned about the types of allergies that occur and how they present on the body. I got to see several cases of malassezia on patients and floor cleaner allergies. Typically they see a lot of cases of mites but we didn't see any today.  We also saw a Rajapalayum, a native hunting breed that is used to hunt boars (the white one pictured below). There was a low caseload because of a celebration today, so the doctor was able to show us some slideshows and videos on other cases and talk about them. I learned a lot. He also told us about wages. Vets just starting out here make 40,000rs/mo. That works out to around $7,500/year. To compare, SA vets starting off in the US make a little less than 10x that. Now India has free public healthcare, but still.
This afternoon we had a lab with the Department of Surgery. I love surgery and was really excited for this. Unfortunately, it was just a powerpoint of lesions and how they fix them here. It was informative but not really exciting. On the way to the lecture we saw a dog that had come for a check up after his rostral mandibulectomy surgery. It looked really neat and almost just like the dog had a large overbite. Tonight the travel agent came and collected our money for the Taj Mahal trip. The internet went out after dinner (another all carb meal- rice, tortillas, chips) so it ended up being a cards (Eden taught me how to play Speed) and SOAPs (medical records) night.
