Madras Day 5 : Ortho/Opthal + Wildlife Lab

Breakfast today was dosa with onion chutney and boiled egg. Today we went to the ortho/opthalmology ward. There were a lot of cases of vitamin deficiencies causing lameness. I saw a fighting rooster come in with clenched foot paralysis caused by thiamine deficiency. We injected Vitamin B and gave vitamins to take home to correct. We also had a baby (4mo) Indian squirrel come in! It had lost the use of its back legs. We injected prednisiolone as an anti inflammatory and will reevaluate in a few days. As far as ocular, I got to help complete an impression smear for a TVT tumor on the eye, got to complete a fluroscene test, and got to examine ulcers on a dog's eye.
Lunch was cabbage slaw, chips, veggie rice, and pineapple. That afternoon we had a necropsy case involving a dog that had had pyometra surgery the previous day. It had turned out that there was hemorrhage post surgery involving the ovarian artery. The dog had died from blood loss. We then had our afternoon class on wildlife medicine. We learned a bit about their program and then got to practice with the blow dart. I was told I had good lungs capacity as my dart was able to shoot the farthest with the most power (thanks Conservators' Center for the practice!). We watched some wildlife videos over tea before leaving to go back to the hostel. On the way back we got to play with some little stray puppies in the hostel area.
At the hostel we met up with our travel agent and discussed our options for the Taj Mahal trip we are taking towards the end. We will be putting down payments some time early next week. We then learned that we had been invited to an Indian wedding reception on Sunday! We are excited to go. I posted a picture of the invitation. It's interesting in that it lists both the bride and the groom's schooling and job title.
Dinner was pork curry, tortillas, rice, and icecream. Pork cury is gross. It looks good and tastes good for the first bite until you realize that it is half pork and half chunks of fat. The fat tasted good, but it was discusting once you realised it was just 1" square cuts of fat. After dinner we were measured by the tailor to fit our sarees. While they were leaving, the power went out twice. It is a pretty common occurrence here for the power to cut off occasionally. We've apparently been very lucky, but it still is a bit inconvenient to lose power in the early evening/night.
