Madras Day 8 : LA Ward/Sx + MMC Lab

So after last night's all carb meal, Julie asked if we could have some more vegetables with our meal. The result was breakfast this morning that consisted of broccoli, green beans, cucumber, carrots, cabbage, and a boiled egg. I think there is a slight communication error. We started our LA (Large Animal) medicine rotation this morning. I like working with cows but have not really had the chance to gain a ton of experience. As far as cases, the ones I saw were pretty uneventful- a case of indigestion and a unidentified blood parasite, both of which required IV fluids and a couple of types of antibiotic and vitamin injections . But it was a good chance to practice taking vitals and auscultating cows. I also got to give a few of the injections. I did learn that the slaughtering of cows is illegal in the state of Tamil Nadu. This means that most beef must be imported. However the slaughter law only applies to cows. So bulls and calves may be slaughtered for meat. We are going to Namakkal in 2 weeks and I figured I will be getting lots of LA experience there, so I left to watch surgery in the Operating "Theatre". I saw a cat with 2 bone fractures resulting in both plating in the tibia and a pin placed in the humerus. Helping Hands doesn't do plating and pinning so I haven't been able to see the procedure before. I was exited to see for plating that they have to 'tap' the bone just like we do to our metal in robotics in order to add threads to the material. I guess it makes sense, I just did not realise it was done.
We went back to lunch early since we had to leave for a school lab at 1. This lab is about 40 minutes away. Its called the Madras Milk Colony. There we got to see some products they are developing and view their positive pressure lab. They had a lot of neat lab equipment. We met the director of the lab and he was just returning from CA. He brought back American candies like Reesie's and M&M's for us to have. Afterwards we took the 40 min trip back to the hostel. We took some of our chairs up to the balcony after dinner and a few of us relaxed and talked for a while until bed. There were flying foxes that you can see if you watch for them!
